Words from the studio

Glossary

The terms you will hear in the studio and read in the guides, explained in plain words.

Attachment

The point where an extension is attached to your own hair. As the hair grows, the attachment moves away from the root.

Guide: Hair extensions
Balayage

A lightening technique in which the lightener is painted on freehand, in brush strokes. It gives a soft blend from a darker root to lighter ends and grows out less noticeably than classic highlights.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Blow-dry

Drying the hair with a dryer and a brush into the shape you want: straight, with volume, or in waves.

Guide: Cut and styling
Colour correction

Putting right a colour that is unwanted or uneven, for example after colouring at home. It often takes several steps, and sometimes several visits.

Guide: Colour
Consultation

The conversation before a service: what you want, what your hair is like now and what is realistic for it. For lightening and extensions it is the first step.

Guide: Hair extensions
Depth (level)

How light or dark a colour is, regardless of its shade. Two browns can sit at the same depth while one is warm and the other cool.

Guide: Colour
Extensions

Additional hair attached alongside your own for length, volume or both.

Guide: Hair extensions
Foils

The sheets that strands are wrapped in during lightening. They keep the lightened hair apart from the rest and hold in warmth.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Gloss

A gentle colour that does not lighten but refreshes the tone and adds shine. It fades gradually, without a hard regrowth line.

Guide: Colour
Head spa

A scalp-care treatment given lying down, on a bed with a wash basin. The studio has such a station; ask about the treatment when you call.

Henna

A plant-based dye. It stays in the hair for a long time and behaves differently from salon colour, so it is important to mention it before lightening.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Highlights

Fine strands of hair are lightened separately, usually in foils, from root to end. They give evenly lighter hair.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Home colour

Shop-bought colour applied at home. Its pigment builds up on the lengths and is harder to remove, so say so before a colour change or lightening.

Guide: Colour
Layers

A cut in which the upper sections are shorter than the lower ones. It gives movement and volume, and needs the shape kept up a little more often.

Guide: Cut and styling
Lightening

The process that lifts pigment out of the hair. The darker the hair, or the more often it has been coloured, the longer the route to light.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Pigment

What gives hair its colour: the natural pigment in the strand, or the artificial pigment from a dye.

Guide: Colour
Porous hair

Hair that takes in and loses moisture easily, often after lightening. It loses tone faster and needs more care.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Regrowth

New hair at the root, in your natural colour, that appears as the hair grows.

Guide: Colour
Root shadow

The root is toned slightly darker than the lengths so the blend is softer and regrowth less noticeable.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Sensitivity test

A small amount of colour is put on the skin in advance to check whether the skin reacts. Ask about it if you have ever reacted to hair colour.

Guide: Colour
Toner

A gentle colour applied after lightening that sets the shade of blonde: cool, beige or golden. Toner does not lighten; it fades with washing and is refreshed in the studio.

Guide: Blonde and lightening
Warm and cool tones

Warm tones lean towards gold, copper or honey; cool tones towards ash, beige or grey. The same tone does not suit every complexion equally.
